Launceston City Heart Project

Strong heart, better streets and places.

The Launceston City Heart Project is an extraordinary opportunity to shape the future of one of Tasmania's most significant social, employment and commercial precincts - its Central Business District (CBD).  We are excited to be launching this project which provides many different ways for community, local businesses, investors, visitors, schools, organisations and everyone else to get involved, have a say and even get hands on to create a strong heart for Launceston.

Throughout June, July and August we will be asking you to take part in activities to shape the future CBD and improve its streets and public places.

June and July: The Launceston City Council is working with CoDesign Studio, to hold a series of workshops and pop-up street consultations, which invite you to share your insights about the future CBD you want. Together we will identify key locations, find out what is working well, what needs to change and how we can get there through getting hands on.

August: We will follow up with ‘Test my Idea’ sessions where a number of ideas for CBD improvements will be prototyped to try them out.

You can also get involved (a little or a lot) on social media (using #LauncestonHeart), through activities on this site, including surveys, quick polls and dropping an idea onto the Launceston City Map.

  • We want to know - how do you live, work and play in the city and how would you like to in the future?
  • What are the key improvements that you think a strong CBD needs?
  • Which places and streets do you think need to be the focus to breath live into the city centre?
  • What is your idea for the City Heart?

There are lots of ways to have your say!
Throughout the CBD look out for posters, stickers and postcards.  Look in your letterbox, on your street, on the web and in your newspaper for other ways to take part.  You can also upload photos and engage in CBD DIY improvements activities.

Help create a strong heart, better streets and places for Launceston!

Earlier this year we invited the Launceston community to have a say in the future of its CBD.  We invited key stakeholders to workshops to find our more information and to have a say and we captured the wider community through newspaper, television and radio advertising.

There were lots of ways to have a say! By online survey, paper based survey, at workshops, pop-up street consultations.  We then tested your ideas with prototyping sessions in the Mall and Civic Square.

We have now summarised all your information.  You can have a look at the reports by clicking on the following... Continue reading

The consultation summary was presented to the Council and the Executive Management team on Monday 15 December 2014.  From here, the principles and concepts discussed throughout the engagement process will be formulated into an overall CBD City Heart Masterplan.  The Masterplan will then provide the City of Launceston with clear directions to recommend priority projects for the City's future.
