Civic Square Public Amenities Proposal

Consultation has concluded

The City of Launceston is currently undertaking a redevelopment of Civic Square as part of the Launceston City Heart Project.

Meanwhile a major redevelopment of Macquarie House is about to get started, transforming one of the city's oldest buildings into a modern innovation and tech hub.

Civic Square's existing public toilet facilities — housed beneath Macquarie House — will be demolished as part of that building's redevelopment, and in any case are due for replacement. They no longer meet contemporary standards, and have no disabled access.

The close timing of the Macquarie House redevelopment and the Civic Square redevelopment provide an opportunity to include new public amenities facilities in Civic Square, and the Council has proposed constructing a building with four toilets and baby change facilities.

That facility has been through the public development process, giving anyone with a view an opportunity to oppose it or comment on its design before a decision on approval was made by the Council.

The proposal was prominently advertised, with public comments closing on November 7. Only one representation was received.

The Council is giving residents a final opportunity to comment on the proposal.
