Greater LauncestonDo you dream about the future of your City and what it will be like in 20 years time? Will it be the City you want your children and grandchildren to live in? Will you want to live in it?

The Launceston City Council is inviting you to have your say on the Greater Launceston Plan.

This one page introduction tells you how the Plan came about and the suburbs and other communities involved.

The Greater Launceston Plan has a strong focus on community needs and values. We are asking you to help us develop a vision for the next 20 years.

Tell us how you think our City should look, how the people should live, how will they get around (motor vehicles, buses, bicycles, on foot), the type of jobs that should be available..............and much more! Your ideas will help form a shared vision for the future of our fine City.

If you only do ONE thing!
Then please take a few minutes to complete the Survey.

It is pretty easy to get around the city compared to other places. This is one of the great things about living here. Maybe we are a bit too car dependent? There are too many heavy trucks in the CBD as well, and it’s not that easy to get around as a pedestrian. We want more cycle ways and better footpath and trails. It would be really great if we could have a better public transport system. Bring back the old trams at least for tourists!!! What do you think?

Greater Launceston people are proud. They love their homes, family and living in such a beautiful natural environment. It is so easy to get around. But we need to improve our education and health systems, and create more life in the City and suburbs. More walking trails please. And no matter what happens make sure you protect our heritage – it’s what gives the city its character.

Many agree that the environment is our biggest asset – and we need to preserve it. Improvements in air quality have been achieved with the reduction in the use of wood fires. We also have some amazing parklands that we treasure and use. The Tamar and North and South Esk Rivers are so important to who we are. Maybe we need more green buildings and more street trees?

Population growth in Tasmania has been slower than mainland Australia. Maybe this is a good thing as the last thing we want is mainlanders coming and spoiling our natural environment. Others think that without population growth greater Launceston’s economy won’t excel.

The question remains: how many more people can greater Launceston sustain? If it is to grow where will they live? Do we want more apartments and townhouses, or do we need more suburban living? If we are to grow, what additional health and education services do we need?
