Consultation has concluded
The City of Launceston is seeking feedback on a proposal to improve pedestrian safety in High Street.
The intersection at High Street and Howick Street has been a concern within the community for a number of years, due to the number of near-misses involving cars and children in this area.
The City has been working with the local neighbourhood and land owners, as well as the East Launceston Primary school to develop a solution we believe balances all users' needs.
The ultimate priority is to provide a safe environment for our most vulnerable road users - which in this instance is pedestrians, particularly school-aged children, who use High Street. As High Street carries a large volume of traffic on a daily basis (nearly 14,000 vehicles per day) we believe the proposed changes, will significantly improve both pedestrian and motorists safety.
The proposal includes:
Installing traffic signals on High Street at the Howick Street intersection
Including two pedestrian crossing points - one on High Street and one across Howick Street
An adjustment to kerbing, line markings and road signage to accommodate the above changes.
NOTE: The timing of the light changes will ensure High Street remains the priority, as Howick Street lights will only be activated if motorists are entering onto High Street.
The City of Launceston is looking to progress this project over the next six months, so if you use this intersection and/or High Street then have your say by:
Reading over the Q&A's(includes answers to the questions this community has asked us so far)
Answering the Quick Poll above and then...
Providing Feedback if you think there is anything else we need to consider.
